High School Do Over

I woke up from a dream this morning that was thought provoking. In it I was discussing with a fellow graduate (Class of ’81) the outcome of our lives. I asked him if it ended up being what he expected. So this morning I have been wondering what I would have done differently if I could go back today (knowing what I know now) and "do over" the four years I spent at Brazosport High School. Here is my list:
  1. I would not enroll in Shorthand or Bookkeeping.
  2. I would take Typing, but only once. I took it twice because I wanted to improve my WPM.
  3. I would enroll in EVERY Home Economics class they offered and I would have been an active member of Future Homemakers of America (FHA).
  4. I would have paid attention in English and History.
  5. I would have gone to more Basketball Games and Track Meets.
  6. I would have taken an interest in the lives of more of my classmates and teachers.
  7. I would have gotten a job and saved money.
  8. I would have continued with my guitar lessons.
  9. I would have continued to go to the church my parents attended when I was young.
  10. I would have not tried to smoke cigarettes, something I am proud to say I failed at.
  11. I would have joined band in junior high instead of my sophomore year in high school….maybe…..the way I did it had it’s perks.
  12. I would have worn sunscreen (or had it been invented yet?).
  13. I would have eaten breakfast everyday.

This is not an exhaustive list I’m sure, just what I’ve been thinking on this morning. So tell me, what would you have added or subtracted from your four years in high school?

I read your post this morning. I was thoroughly daunted by your list of do-overs I have decided that at my advanced age there are so many do-overs that concern my life that I couldn't begin to start to list them. I was terribly impressed by your list.

Hmmmm...this is thought provoking. I think I should include some pre-highschool items on my list. Of course, I've completely recovered from any regrets....I have too...leave me alone.

1. I would have gone ahead and tried out for band (drums) in sixth grade instead of being convinced that choir was the right choice for me. By the way, the awesome choir teacher that auditioned me did not return for my seventh grade year...bummer.
2. I would have gone fishing with my brothers.
3. I would have stuck with playing tennis.
4. I would have danced more, other than disco.
5. I would have gone to the beach more.
6. I would have read more books.
7. I would have lifted weights.
8. I would have gone to church camp in HS too.
9. I would have gotten the vinyl roof on my Monte Carlo replaced.
10. I would have dated more and maybe avoided the drama/trauma of one girl.
11. I would have broadened my range of friends.
12. I would have said NO to shame.

I'm sure there's more, but that's enough for now. I've got to call my sponsor now. :>)

You know what Yearman, I never went to church camp as a camper and look at how "divine" I turned out. But that would have been fun none the less; I guess I'll have to blame Carlene for that one. LOL!

Interestingly enough I don't feel that I have been out of highschool long to contribute to this but I think I can think of a few.
1.Played guitar and bass as well as trumpet in band.
2.Be the vocal feature with the jazz band.
3.Found Dustin sooner.
4.Gotten my license when I was sixteen.
5.Taught more lessons.
6.Go to a hs basketball game--never went to one.
7.Not have dated Claudio---he went gay a year after we broke up!
8.Tried harder in my classes.
9.Written more music.

Okay, being that I just graduated in ‘99 what I should have done is still fresh in my mind:

1. I would have actually stayed in my classes. I often took a 3 hour lunch and most of my teachers would trade me out of class for a bit of food from Food Science and Nutrition teacher, but I won’t name names.
2. I would have waxed my nasty mustache....so ashamed!!
3. I would have given track my all, instead of just doing what it took to win.
4. I would have never dated Matt... LOSER!!!
5. I would have been proud of the young lady I was and the obstacles I had overcome.
6. I would have slept more; I was literally getting about 5 hours a night and doing so much exercise.
7. I would have lived by the saying, “Hydrate or die!”
8. I would have not compared myself so much to girls that had money, good families and pretty straight hair with pony tails that moved so perfectly when they walked.
9. I would have looked for a church home that I could grow in, thank God for Miss Hanna and YL.

This is all for now; my son needs me and my husband has already called me Brittany Spears because he found Haydee chewing on a cord. THEN when I snapped back at him he called me Andrea Yates...he’s so mean.

I would like to add one more thing---10. "Just said no." to physical therapy.
