Recently I told my friend Laci, the new Family and Consumer Science teacher at RFHS, to email me when Salisbury Steak was on the school menu. There are only three places to get this kind of a meal: TV dinners, hospitals, and school cafeterias. So today I had Salisbury Steak, cabbage (with corn in it) and potatoes au gratin. I love that stuff, but you have to eat it before it cools off because then it gets rubbery. :)

Salisbury Steak
I have such fond memories of school cafeteria food: corn, Salisbury steak, fish sticks, pinto beans, turkey and dressing (OMG), so many good things. Attending school in Brazoria County, we got great meals served to us on mobile steam carts. You could buy a lunch token (red) or get lunch for the whole week (5 tickets). You also had the option of buying an extra milk token (white). We ate them right in our classrooms. They would also put a big bowl of pinto beans with extra white bread in every room during lunch. Then in the afternoon we all got a carton of chocolate milk.

What is Laci's last name?
I think I knew her!
Eamon....it's Laci Cox. She was a graduate of RFHS (cheerleader/homecoming queen) and then she worked with us in YL as a volunteer leader during Shane's first year. Remember?
Yes I do! I think she was the one who graduated and a year later was a sub? Crazy though. Small towns still surprise me.
I love your posts, Ms. Catherina Patina. Ahhh, the yeast rolls in days of yore ... and the turkey and dressing with it's yellowish gravy was divine. I also liked the pigs-in-a-blanket.
When I was old enough to drive, I used to skip lunch period sometimes and go to McD's and get a Fish Filet sandwich for like 60 cents, or something (yes, I am old).
My school lunch cafeteria days were in Goodlettsville, right outside of Nashville. A former classmate is the lunch lady there now! ha
Anyway, back to you, girly - I admire how you make your life your own. Because of people like you, life is interesting and full of creative wonder. There's lots of us unique people (read: weirdos) out here, but not enough of us are blogging. Keep it up! I love your posts.
And I'll take fries with that, ma'am...
Anneta (how some igmos spelled my name in school)
Cathern: You and I could talk for days about the school lunches in BAzoria County. I wish I had one of those cinnamon rolls right now and I'd like some roast beer over rice for supper!!!!
Excuse me, roast beeF. The peanut butter cookies were also great. Those fruit crunch and cobblers were good too. Oh, the white bread and beans...ummmm. I always added the pepper sauce to mine too!! Those were the days, my friend.
Thanks for reminding me of the cinnamon rolls and the roast beef over rice....mmmm.
But it wasn't all good: I hated when they served yams or beets.
Okay, this is an on going rub between myself and BISD. The food here is HORRIBLE! How can lettuce of all things taste bad? I think they are purchasing plastic disguised as food. Whatever happened to that pink birthday cake with the white icing? The turkey & dressing? The REAL fruit, and the burritos! YUM! All the flavor and taste has been removed...it's sad. My granddaughter chooses to eat only the "healthy" cookies at lunch...good food (kids will eat) vs. bad food (kids only eat cookies)...sorry to be so negative. Sounds like Rockport serves better school food these days than the rest of the world.
Susan F.
Susan,
I was talking about my BISD food memories. I am so sad, but not surprised, that they don't do a good job anymore.
Hey, but THANK YOU for mentioning the Pink Birthday Cake.....man that stuff was good. I can almost taste it.
P.S. By the way people....Susan and I ate many a lunch together in Mrs. Jordan's 4th grade class at Velasco Elementary
My favorite was fish sticks with mac and cheese on no meat Fridays.
I liked the little triangles of chocolate cake, but my friends always smashed them -- not that it stopped me from eating them, but still...
