What is YOUR Favorite Scripture?

What is YOUR favorite scripture? I concede how hard it is to pick a favorite verse especially if a person is new to Christianity, but I venture to say that most Christians could pick a favorite verse or maybe even rattle of several favorites. My favorite scripture (for the past couple of years) is pretty much all of Philipians 2, but here is just a sampling:

5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,
6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.
8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.


As Christians we are asked to empty ourselvse of our attitudes and take on Jesus' attitude. We are to not regard what we think we are ENTITLED to as a thing to be grasp but instead humbly serve others. Noble aspirations indeed.

The first verses that popped into my mind were Ephesians 2:8,9 - "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast." That pretty well sums up the Gospel for me - only God can save us; we can't save ourselves.

As to my favorite scripture, first of all, about six different scriptures jumped into my head at first. Your choice is one of my favorites. But I narrowed it down to Hebrews 12:11
"All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness."

I find great comfort in 1 Cor. 12:8-11 - My grace is sufficient for you,for my power is made perfect in weakness...for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Proverbs 3: 5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will keep your path straight.

This is one that has gotten me thru many times of trouble or fear.

Eph. 3:14-19 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

One of my favorites (it's hard to pick one) is Col. 3:12-14 -
"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues, put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."

Why do I like it? It has been my experience that all too often those in the church become judgemental and develop an attitude of sprititual superiority. Additionally, as a counselor, if we could all develop the virtues listed here, I would pretty much be out of a job! Gail R.

Okay~here are a couple of scriptures that I find encouraging. Of course I have a lot, but one is very fresh for me right now~

(14)Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.(15)For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.(16)To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things? (17)For we are not, as so many peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as form God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ. II Cor. 2:14-17

I am studying about being an Authentic Christain and it is so refreshing and exciting!

Cathern: thanks for this blog. I've enjoyed thinking about my favorite scriptures. For they truly are "a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path,"..ooh, that's a good one, Psalms 119:105. I also really love Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." That is heartwarming. Some of my other favorites have already been mentioned. I'll share more later. Thanks again for prompting me to "think on these things," that's another good one. Philippians 4:8, Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.

Here's my scripture, finally - Eph 3:20 "Now glory be to God! By His mighty power at work within us, He is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope."
